With 4-pin 3.5mm plugs on smartphone headsets it cannot be guaranteed that the ground makes reliably the correct contact with sockets designed for 3 in 3.5mm plugs TRS.
Therefore we would recommend to use 3-pin plugs and if necessary a suitable adapter.
