Around the World in 12 songs

Written by:- Isabel Gallagher

Happy World Music Day!

To celebrate, we’re taking you around the world in 12 songs. That’s right, iFi air is back... well, in spirit.

We’re shining a spotlight on the vibrant diversity of global sound, with recommendations that span continents; from the rhythms of Spain and Sweden to the textures of Indonesia, and of course, iFi’s home, the UK.

You'll find a mix of legendary icons and some exciting new discoveries, showcasing a range of genres, cultures, and stories

So, grab your headphones - it's time to travel across the world, one song at a time.

South Korea G-DRAGON

G-DRAGON is a true trendsetter in the K-pop industry, constantly pushing boundaries in both music and style. Gyro Drop is chaotic, catchy, and unpredictable – the kind of track that hijacks your brain and won’t let go. It’s a musical rollercoaster that perfectly captures why G-Dragon is at the forefront of K-pop innovation.

Indonesia - Ali

Hailing from Jakarta, Ali describes their sound as Middle Eastern beats with a Southeast twist.” The trio blends 70s Indonesian rock with Arabic influences to create a psychadelic, rythmic experience. Blue Lotus, from their latest EP Patterns, is a hypnotic track with rich layers that slowly pull you in, revealing new depths and textures with every listen.

Japan – Kyoto Jazz Massive

Kyoto Jazz Massive are pioneers of the nu-jazz scene, known for blending soulful instrumentation with electronic elements. Eclipse is a masterclass balance, pairing crisp jazz drumming with shimmering synths and subtle funk undertones. Each layer builds on the last, creating a fluid, genre-blurring soundscape that feels like an ongoing conversation between past and future.

Brazil Rogê

Rio-born Rogê brings a laid-back charisma to everything he touches, fusing Brazilian samba, bossa nova and Afro-Brazilian rhythms with effortless style. A Força - Remix is a slow-burning celebration, full of layered vocals, rich percussion, and sun-soaked energy. It’s rhythmic, entrancing, and feels like a party you never want to leave.

Nigeria Fela Kuti

We couldn’t take a global music journey without including Fela Kuti, the pioneer of Afrobeat. Water No Get Enemy is an iconic track, weaving soulful saxophone with a hypnotic rhythm that’s both powerful and deeply human. If you’re new to Fela Kuti, this is the perfect introduction into his rich and revolutionary sound.

Australia – Amyl and the Sniffers

In slight contrast to Kuti’s afrobeat, we have Amyl and the Sniffers bring a raw punk rock energy full of attitude. Formed in 2016, they’ve made a name for themselves with electrifying, high-energy performances. Hertz perfectly captures their grit and charisma, delivering pure, unapologetic passion.

Sweden - The Cardigans

You might know The Cardigans for Lovefool, but their early work has a dreamy, indie pop vibe. Carnival, from their debut album, is the epitome of this - featuring upbeat floating melodies to achieve a nostalgic, sun-drenched atmosphere.

Spain Rosalia

Renowned for her musicianship, Rosalia has broken new ground for both female and Spanish-language artists, making a powerful impact on the global pop scene. Saoko exemplifies her fearless artistry – bold, genre-defying, and infused with trap-influenced electronics and flamenco rhythms that reflect her artistic evolution.

Mexico Girl Ultra

Hailing from Mexico City, Girl Ultra fuses sultry R&B smoothness with vibrant Latin club vibes. Her song Bombay is a sleek, confident anthem that radiates pure it girl’ energy. She brings a fresh voice to global alt-R&B and is unafraid to push its boundaries.

USA - Erykah Badu

Erykah Badu is a cornerstone of neo-soul. Didn’t Cha Know is a mellow, deeply soulful gem. With rich bass lines and introspective lyrics, her storytelling and warm vocals make every song feel like a spiritual experience.

Ireland - Fontaines DC

Irish post-punk band Fontaines DC are masters of crafting gloomy atmospherics, layered with poetic lyrics. Roman Holiday is restrained yet powerful, evoking a grey-sky mood that feels both honest and cinematic.

United Kingdom – The Beatles

We wrap up our journey with the band that changed modern music forever - The Beatles.

From catchy pop rock to bold psychedelic experimentation, their sound defined a generation. Don’t Let Me Down stands out as one of their most intimate and emotional songs, anchored by the raw vulnerability in McCartney and Lennon’s vocals.

For those lucky enough to own this classic on vinyl, our ZEN Phono 3 brings every detail of this timeless record vividly to life.
