Refined flagship amplifier gives serious headphone collectors the power, precision, and sonic control to end the era of owning multiple amps.
Southport, UK: Today, iFi Audio have announced the release of an evolution of its reference-class flagship headphone amplifier, iCAN PHANTOM 1.5, built for one purpose; to be the last amplifier a dedicated headphone enthusiast ever needs to buy.
Refining the acclaimed iCAN PHANTOM with a suite of usability and precision upgrades, the iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 is designed to drive any set of headphones, from the most delicate in-ear monitor to the most demanding electrostatic headsets, to give listeners the fine-grained sonic control to tune every system to their exact taste.
Audiophiles’ headphone collections tend to outgrow a single amplifier fast. One amp is bought to properly drive sensitive IEMs, another to handle power-hungry planar magnetics, and a separate energiser is added to run electrostatic headsets. The result, for many enthusiasts, is a shelf of amplifiers, a tangle of cables, and constant swapping between sessions, creating an expensive and inconvenient way to enjoy listening.
The iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 was built to end that compromise. It is one of the very few amplifiers on the market capable of driving virtually any headphone type, and one of the only designs that pairs that versatility with a genuinely capable sonic adjustment toolset. Not just enough power to run a headphone, but the tools to make it sing.
At the heart of the iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 is a choice of two fully separate, switchable input stages, a discrete Class A solid-state stage and an all-valve Class A stage built around matched General Electric 5670 tubes. These two distinct modes are accompanied by a Tube+ mode that dials back loop gain and negative feedback, and accentuates the most sonically enhancing harmonics for a warmer, more romantic character. In effect, listeners get three distinctly voiced amplifiers in one unit – Solid-State for pace and immediacy, Tube for fluidity, and Tube+ for a rich tonal saturation.
That flexibility extends across the amplifier's full sonic toolset with a three-step XBass circuit which lets listeners dial in low-frequency weight to taste, while a dedicated XSpace circuit, with separate matrices for headphone and speaker use, widens and opens up the soundstage. Three gain settings, now expanded to 0dB, 12dB and 24dB on the 1.5 (up from 0dB, 9dB and 18dB), gives finer headroom control across sensitive IEMs through to demanding planar and electrostatic headsets.
For electrostatic headphones, iFi's integrated iESL energiser technology removes the need for a separate outboard unit entirely, delivering up to 640V, a precision that used to require a dedicated second box.
Building on the original iCAN PHANTOM's True Differential Balanced, PureWavePRO circuit design and capacitive power supply, the 1.5 revision adds a set of refinements aimed at everyday usability and long-term ownership. A new VU meter display brings real-time visual level monitoring to the front panel, alongside a redesigned UI now unified with the iDSD PHANTOM for a consistent experience across iFi's flagship range.
Gain staging has been expanded from 18dB to 24dB, paired with enhanced IEMatch attenuation of up to 12dB single-ended and 24dB balanced, for more precise matching across headphone types. The volume potentiometer now uses buffered pads for a smoother, more damped rotation feel, while an anti-fingerprint coating on the top glass and screen keeps the unit looking as refined as it sounds. iFi has also expanded control through its Nexis app, adding a reset button, product renaming, and real-time tube health status monitoring alongside the existing remote-control functionality, diagnostics, and over-the-air firmware updates.
For the established headphone collector who already owns multiple amplifiers to serve an IEM, a planar, and an electrostatic headset, the iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 is designed as the consolidation purchase. One chassis, one set of cables, and a full sonic toolset capable of getting the best from any headphone that comes next. For the enthusiast just beginning to expand their collection, it's a single investment that's built to grow with them.
