Welcome to 2019 – yep, nineteen years after the Millennium Bug was supposed to wipe out the human race, we’re all still here.
So, that means another year to change stuff for the better.
Maybe you want to eat healthier.
Maybe you’ve decided to see more of the world.
Or maybe you’ve made it your goal to land your dream job at iFi audio – I mean, I managed it last year, so why not you?
Whatever it is, we all need a bit of motivation to help us achieve our goals, that’s why I’ve chosen six songs to start your New Year.
Make Music Your Motivation.
It’s essential to start motivated and carry it through, and by adding these classics to your playlist when you’re having a day when you feel like giving up, they’ll remind you to pull yourself up by your bootstraps and carry on with your goals:
Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ – Micheal Jackson
Wanna be startin’ somethin’ new?
Then this MJ classic is the perfect disco-funk track to get you started. It’s full of energy and, well, actually it’s not the most upbeat of songs when you listen to some of the lyrics.
You’ll be always tryin’
To stop that child from cryin’
Hustlin’, stealin’, lyin’
Now baby’s slowly dyin’
But do you know what?
I’m going to completely ignore that section, as well as the bit where he says, ‘You’re a vegetable’ (unless your plan this year is to open a Greengrocers, then that bit is still valid).
No, the bit to remind yourself you can succeed this year is this:
Lift your head up high
And scream out to the world
I know I am someone
And let the truth unfurl
No one can hurt you now
Because you know what’s true
Yes, I believe in me
So you believe in you
Believe in yourself and all the things you want to change in 2019 will happen.
Just no hustlin’, stealin’ or lyin’, yeah?
Feeling Good – Nina Simone
Wait, that’s the wrong song in the avatar?
Sure is, here’s a little titbit fact fans, Nina Simone’s version of ‘Feeling Good’ was never originally released as a single, it was an album track on her album ‘I Put A Spell On You’ (but boy, what an album track!).
The song ‘Feeling Good’ may be an oldie, but it’s an absolute goldie, packed full of inspiring, uplifting lyrics.
There’re birds in the sky. There’s blossom on the tree. Dragonflies are out in the sun and butterflies, well, they’re out having fun.
But most of all:
It’s a new dawn
It’s a new day
It’s a new life for me
And I’m feeling good
And if you’ve kept the promise to yourself to learn how to paint, then you’ll be feeling fantastic right now.
I Gotta Feeling – The Black Eyed Peas
If you’re looking for a song that lays its cards on the table from the off and never lets up, then ‘I Gotta Feeling’ by The Black Eyed Peas is that song.
From the start we’re told:
I gotta feeling that tonight’s gonna be a good night
That tonight’s gonna be a good night
That tonight’s gonna be a good, good night
And from thereon in we’re told to live it up and party every day, p-p-party every day.
It’s a relentless dance track reminding us to make sure we make the most of life. Life is for living, so if you’ve vowed to make a change, get out there, live it up and live your dream.
Let’s do it, let’s do it, let’s do it, do it, do it, do it.
This Will Be Our Year – The Zombies
This one is a bit left field, I know, and there might be a few people reading this right now who have no idea what this song is. However, for the younger readers it’s in the new Netflix Sabrina series as well as in the final episode of Season 2 of Amazon’s The Marvellous Mrs Maisel.
Ah, now you remember?
For the rest of us, this is a lovely little song from 1968, taken from the band’s album, Odessey and Oracle, and featuring the lyrics:
Now we’re there and we’ve only just begun
This will be our year, took a long time to come
Yes, it’s taken all your life for 2019 to get here. It’s only just begun – so let’s smash it!
Happy – Pharrell Williams
There are few songs that make you feel fuzzy and, well, happy like ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams.
It puts a spring in your step and gets those positive vibes flowing, which is vital when you feel them slipping away a few weeks into the New Year.
However, pop this little beauty on and you’ll feel energised to keep your resolutions in place, and with lyrics that include:
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you know what happiness is to you
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like that’s what you wanna do
there’s no reason to give up on your new direction.
Rock ‘n’ Roll Star – Oasis
I’d considered ‘Paradise’ by Coldplay here because that’s where we all want to be but, frankly, wouldn’t we all love to be rock ‘n’ roll stars instead?
‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Star’ is a rousing tune fills you up and makes you realise it doesn’t matter what others think because our dreams are our own.
Hence the lyrics:
I live my life for the stars that shine
People say it’s just a waste of time
Then, they said I should feed my head
Well that to me was just a day in bed
I’ll take my car and drive real far
They’re not concerned about the way we are
In my mind my dreams are real
Now we’re concerned about the way I feel
Tonight I’m a rock ‘n’ roll star
It’s a heart-thumping tune that never lets up and is full of swagger and arrogance. Not a bad way to lay their cards on the table for the first track on their debut album.
They made their dreams come true, and there’s no reason you can’t reach the stars too. Whack this on your playlist and you’ll be walking like a Mancunian in no time – while receiving a jolt of energy from the boys from Burnage.
I don’t know about you but I still haven’t made up my mind what I’m going to change this year. Eating less chocolate definitely isn’t one of them, not while I still have a tub of Heroes, Roses, half a box of After Eights and two bars of Toblerone in the cupboard.
Catch ya next time,
